RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in supervising the staff, resources, operations, and outreach activities of the Children's Services department.
- Help plan, recommend, and carry out a program of services and activities for preschool and elementary age children and for educators, students, and other youth-services professionals.
- Develop the collection for the immediate use of the department and as a resource collection for all agencies in the system.
- Provide a superlative standard of professional librarianship as an advocate in the community for the welfare, rights, and interests of children.
- Participate in planning, organization, development, presentation, and evaluation of children's services on a system-wide basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- ALA-accredited master of library science degree with two-three years of increasing responsibility for services to children.
- Supervisory experience. Valid driver's license.
- Extensive knowledge of children's literature and current issues and trends in library services to children.
- Familiarity with automated systems, Internet, and a variety of computer programs.
- Strong interpersonal, communications and management skills to enable effective interaction with children and adults of varied backgrounds.
- Strong programming skills. Ability to act as an advocate for children's needs to library administrators, staff, and the public.
- Problem-solving ability sufficient to maintain a coordinated, cooperative working relationship with agency managers, children's specialists, and other staff. Strong, positive, proactive service philosophy.
- Cooperative spirit, reliability, enthusiasm, friendliness, energy, resourcefulness, initiative, tact, good judgment, and a sense of humor are essential.
Schedule will include a variety of day, evening and weekend hours.
PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Bilingual ability in Spanish or an Asian language is desirable but not required.
